Carers in Hertfordshire is the county's leading charity for unpaid carers. They are partly funded by Hertfordshire County Council and the NHS in Hertfordshire.  They work in partnership with them and other local organisations to provide services to carers, ranging from giving information and advice, to helping you to make time for yourself and encouraging you to look after your own health and wellbeing.

They support carers of all ages and all their services are free.  Many of their staff and trustees are carers themselves, so they understand the challenges you face and what support you might need.

Young Carers:

Young carers are children or young people who care for a member of their family.  The Young Carers Service works with those under 19 and their families, to help them assess the right support, at the time, to reduce the negative impact of caring on their lives.

They also support a Young Carers Council, giving young carers the chance to have their say on the things that matter most to them and offer some fun activities where young carers can meet other young carers.

Carer's Assessment:

All carers are entitled to a Carer's Assessment which is an opportunity to discuss how caring for someone affects your life and to work out how you can carry on doing the things that are important to you and your family.  It is not assessment of your ability to care, but a way to find out what support you might need to help you balance your caring role with your own needs, responsibilities and commitments.

As a result, you will receive information and advice to help you in your caring role.  You may get ongoing support to make caring easier, such as money to spend on having a break from your caring responsibilities.

If you person you care for lives in Hertfordshire, the Carer's Assessment will normally be carried out by Hertfordshire County Council.  To ask for a Carer's Assessment call 0300 123 4042 or 0300 123 4043 if the carer is a child.
